Christian Science Monitor:  "Audio excerpts from the speech indicate that Santorum said Satan had successfully subverted academia first, followed by mainline Protestantism, which he said is ‘in shambles,' and then the culture. Politics came last.  ‘The body politic held up pretty well until the last couple of decades,' he said in the speech."

WashPost:  "A rarefied group of millionaires and billionaires [are] acting as kingmakers in the GOP contest, often helping to decide, with a simple transfer of money, which candidate might survive another day.  In January, just five donors gave a total of $19 million, a quarter of the money raised for the presidential race that month."

"Gov. Jerry Brown, who has rarely left the state since taking office last year, will travel to Washington this weekend to meet with President Barack Obama and governors at the National Governors Association's winter meeting."

Politico:  "Five factors could indicate trouble for the economy - and the president's reelection prospects.  1, Gas prices; 2, middle-class clothing spending; 3, looming European crisis, debt drama and another global meltdown; 4, continuing housing trouble; and 5, unemployment among African-Americans."

Detroit Free Press:  "That made it OK for both [Romney and Santorum] to swing with a heavy bat without any regard for or interest in independent voters or conservative Democrats. They came at Michigan -- speeches pre-written -- as if the state were already lost in the fall.  Because it is."

Politico:  "Romney, Ron Paul and Santorum decided to skip the March 1 debate that was to be co-hosted by CNN and the Georgia and Ohio state Republican parties.   CNN decided to cancel the debate after being left with a single confirmation, Newt Gingrich, who would have been left to square off solo with moderator John King."

LA Times:  "New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, no stranger to controversy, is standing firm in his decision to fly flags at half-staff on behalf of Whitney Houston, despite complaints that the late pop singer should not have that recognition because of her history of drug problems."

Gallup:  "U.S. economic confidence is at -20 for the week ending Feb. 12, improved from -25 the prior week.  Americans have grown steadily more positive about economic conditions since last August, when the budget battles, stock market declines, and fears of a double-dip recession sent economic confidence to a low for the year."

"Gov. John Kasich used his State of the State address last week to make his case that Ohio is moving in the right direction, but the speech did little to change his low job approval rating.  The governor's approval rating has risen to 40% from 39% three weeks ago while his disapproval number dropped to 46% from 48%."

WNYC:  "If Boehner follows his party, he follows them off a cliff -- or at least back into the minority -- in the upcoming election. If he tries to lead them instead, it's not clear they'll follow."
